The remarkable success of the 68-episode series „The Detective Show”, which is based on the works of Michael Connelly, strongly demonstrates the superior ability to turn literary works into highly successful television productions. Although there are numerous successful screen adaptations, the four-part Prime Video franchise has emerged as a mainstay of the detective drama genre since 2014.

In the past, many volumes were considered impossible to film, but the streaming revolution encouraged filmmakers and TV creators to boldly approach the most famous best-sellers. This evolution of the television environment has in turn stimulated numerous innovative interpretations. Even the works of H. P. Lovecraft, known for their unique style of cosmic horror, which was often considered visually unrealistic because of its esoteric nature, have found screen representation.

It may seem unexpected that one of the most successful translations from book to television in the last two decades comes from a series of accessible detective novels, given the diversity of exceptional productions that adapt notoriously difficult literary works. However, the experience gained from the controversial finale of HBO's fantasy series, Game of Thrones, has shown us that an excellent adaptation of a simple narrative can surpass an ambitious but deeply flawed attempt to adapt a vast epic.

Fortunately, Bosch author Michael Connelly possesses a remarkable talent for creating simple yet extremely captivating thrillers. Over the course of his long career spanning several decades, he wrote over 44 volumes; 25 of them featuring the noted LAPD detective, Hieronymus HarryBosch.

Instead of adapting a specific volume

Prime Video's Bosch series is positioned as one of the best book adaptations to stream in the modern era. The inspiration for this success came directly from these literary works, being released in February 2014 and ending after 68 episodes in June 2021. Although Michael Connelly's next series, The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix, managed to last for five seasons, the Bosch franchise falls into a separate category. Not only did it spawn three spin-off series, but Bosch also inspired a lot of similar detective drama in the years since the show debuted.

Based on the novel collection of the same name, Bosch follows the fates of the irascible homicide detective Titus Welliver as he balances his investigation of the Hollywood Hills murders with exposing corruption among his colleagues. As in the book, Bosch is an isolated individual who does not easily integrate into groups, but this distant attitude is justified by the extent of corruption within his department.

Instead of adapting a specific volume of the series for each new season, unlike the Reacher approach to Prime Video, which was based on the Lee Child series of novels, Bosch chose a more experimental method. Each appearance in the Prime Video series combined elements from Connelly's various works, ensuring that those familiar with the author's novels were also surprised by the changes to the source material. This ingenious strategy allowed Bosch to get the best of both worlds: the adaptation used the novels as inspiration, but rearranged the narrative details and events in a completely new form, surprising even readers already experienced with the original text.

Only season 1 incorporated elements from Bosch Book 3: The Concrete Blonde , Book 12: Echo Park , and Book 8: City of Bones . Bosch also wisely managed to alter some of the character's details, thus preventing seasons from being just a simple repetition of literary material. While Karin Slaughter's adaptation of Will Trent on ABC advanced this approach, turning a major antagonist into a heroic supporting character, Bosch changed elements related to the main character himself. Although it remains reserved and does not readily tolerate incompetence, Bosch presents in the series a greater capacity for collaboration and cooperation than in Connelly's novels.

The success of the Bosch franchise underscores the profound versatility of the character created by Michael Connelly. This change was a wise decision on the part of the creators when they decided to expand the Bosch universe. First, there was the sequel series Bosch: Legacy , which even Titus Welliver described as a direct sequel to the original series. Furthermore, the spin-off Ballard was released in 2025, starring Maggie Q as Bosch's colleague, Renee Ballard, a detective specialising in old cases. Ballard was acclaimed by critics, in part because Welliver reprised his role as Bosch in three of the first ten episodes, giving the spin-off a legitimacy.
