Netflix Epic 'La Bola Negra' Expands Theatrical Run to 465 Cinemas

Theatrical Expansion Details

' La Bola Negra' premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May. It began a limited North American rollout on October 16. THR reports the theatrical expansion will cover 465 theaters nationally starting November 6. Netflix initially projected 200 to 300 locations. Public success surpassed these initial expectations. The film has already earned $1.3 million in the North American market.

Weekend Performance Metrics

During its North American launch weekend, ' La Bola Negra' achieved an average per screen of $69,375 across four theaters. This marks the second-highest average for non-English language films. From October 30 to November 1, the R-rated Netflix film generated $418,000 from 38 cinemas.

Its international performance is notable. In Spain, the film reached third place on the historical Spanish film box office chart. It is now among the top 10 most profitable local films in cinema history.

International Acclaim

Netflix rarely prioritizes theatrical releases. However, Academy eligibility requires cinema participation. The streaming service has already supported titles like Roma (2018), All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), Maestro (2023), and Frankenstein (2025), achieving nominations or wins.

Netflix's Shifting Strategy

The official Netflix release is set for December 2. This grants ' La Bola Negra' a 47-day cinema window, the longest for the service. This suggests a strategic shift for Netflix. Greta Gerwig's Narnia (February 12, 2027) could test this model. Narnia will have an exclusive, full theatrical run, including IMAX, before streaming.

Release Window and Future Tests

The film features talents like Guitarricadelafuente, Lorenzo Zurzolo, Javier Butler, Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, Lola Dueñas, Carlos González, and Milo Quifes. Critics praise the work. Rotten Tomatoes holds an 85% critic score. Popcornmeter registers an even higher score of 97%.

' La Bola Negra' is positioned as a key work for the awards season. Positive reviews and expanded screenings boost its Oscar influence. Its audience impact is clear, though next year's outcome remains uncertain.
