Iron Man's most iconic line could define Doomsday if Marvel handles it right

The Power of „I Am Iron Man”

Robert Downey Jr. returns as Doctor Doom in „Avengers: Doomsday,”sparking questions about the narrative motivation. With the film less than a month away, audiences still ask why the actor who played the MCU's protagonist for decades becomes the franchise's new big bad. While the visual similarity between Doom and Tony Stark will undoubtedly be addressed in the film, no clear indication has been given regarding the narrative purpose. A perfect approach would be to subvert one of the universe's most iconic lines: „I am Iron Man.”This phrase, delivered at the end of the first Iron Man film, marked the start of the MCU and established Tony Stark's superhero identity. It became so associated with the character that it was also his last line in „Avengers: Endgame,”when he sacrifices himself to undo the damage caused by Thanos.

Now, with RDJ returning, a new variant of this line should appear in „Doomsday.”If Doom's grand introduction begins with a similar line, such as „I am Doom,”it immediately signals that the parallels with Tony Stark are intentional. This prepares the audience to look for these similarities, placing the viewer in the shoes of characters who cannot ignore the resemblances.

Downey's Range and the Casting Gamble

Although we do not know why Doom resembles Stark, giving Downey the chance to subvert the heroic role he has played for decades would be extremely entertaining. Downey has an immense range, and the role of Doom offers a major stage to demonstrate it. We have never seen a Downey so turned on his head in the MCU, and a line like I am Doomwill make the contrast between the actor's two interpretations hit harder. RDJ's choice as Doom is probably the biggest gamble of Doomsday, and it is still unclear if it will succeed. After dropping Jonathan Majors' Kang as the Multiverse Saga villain, Marvel Studios knew it had to do something big to save the decade's final projects. Downey's Doom was the answer to this problem; while it immediately won many fans, some skeptics were not as enthusiastic.

Why Does Doom Look Like Stark?

The biggest mistake Doomsdaycould make is to not address in-universe the decision to cast Downey. Since the Multiverse Saga was entirely about variants and amusing casting decisions, the audience is prepared to ask why Doom looks like Stark. If the film does not mention this, it will be clear that RDJ's return is just a cheap marketing trick. It would be a cynical move to bring back the MCU's biggest star in a different role just for news headlines, but if Doomsdayhas no narrative reason for this casting, it will be hard to argue otherwise. There are infinite possibilities for what Doomsdaycould do with this decision, but the most important thing is to do something.

There is a multitude of fun thematic and narrative ideas that can be explored by bringing RDJ as Doom, whether it is interesting character dynamics with heroes who knew Stark, the possibility of bringing Iron Man back, or anything else. Since this is the biggest mystery surrounding Doomsday,it is evident that it will not be revealed until the film reaches theaters. However, many of us hope that Doomsdaymanages to walk this fine line, because the way the film handles Downey's return could save or ruin the movie.
