Why a Prequel Instead of a Sequel?
The decision to launch a prequel rather than a direct sequel signals Netflix's strategy to keep the universe evolving. By shifting the timeline and setting, the studio can introduce new mysteries and characters. This move also reduces the pressure on the original cast, allowing them to step away while the brand continues to grow.
Choosing a prequel gives writers creative freedom to build the world's backstory. It also lets Netflix attract a new generation of fans without needing the original actors. The supernatural terrors will differ from the Upside Down, suggesting a broader mythology.
