The series' stunning visuals contributed significantly

In the competitive landscape of Netflix, where various genres claim a remarkable presence, the Peak Animation fantasy series, titled Arcane, stands out as an exceptional creation for several fundamental reasons. The fantasy genre presents significant challenges in making a successful narrative. Although certain film productions have left lasting imprints in this area, adapting these universes for the TV series format has proved to be a much more difficult task.

When Netflix began distributing the animated series based on the Riot Games video game Arcane in 2021, it became immediately apparent that the production was breaking existing standards. This distinction comes from a number of things: from the extremely rich narrative development by co-creators Christian Linke and Alex Yee, who revived characters from the popular game League of Legends, to the captivating visual style that captured audiences from the first second.

A crucial aspect of Arcana's success was its ability to establish a cult following over just two seasons. The narrative structure has developed in a way that is perfectly suited to the format, characters and fantastic context of the series. Therefore, Arcane is positioned as an unparalleled fantasy animated series.

It's essential to keep in mind that the fantastic genre requires a delicate balance. The presence of magical elements, fantastic creatures, and various supernatural aspects transports viewers from ordinary reality into a much more mystical space. However, to maintain the public's interest, these elements of pure fantasy must be balanced with characters, emotions, and narrative arcs more anchored in reality.

The series' stunning visuals contributed significantly to setting the tone and initially motivating viewers to stay involved. This top aesthetic is not just a simple surface decoration; it serves as the foundation for the remarkable tension and enthusiasm that Arcane cultivates as the world develops in which the two sisters, Vi and Jinx, are on opposite sides of a major conflict.

The context offered by the two distinct cities, Piltover and Zaun, provides a dramatic backdrop for an exciting story where different worlds clash. The creative team behind Arcane has managed to overcome the common obstacle of video game-based adaptations, offering a production that ranks among the best in its category.

It's an unfortunate trend, both

In the context of the dominance of streaming in modern television, it is common for series to have long intervals between seasons, and Arcane is no exception. Although the premiere took place in 2021, it had to wait until 2024 for the release of the second season, a three-year gap from the original debut. However, despite this temporary hiatus, Arcane has achieved something that most other streaming shows fail to: it delivered a satisfactory conclusion.

Rather than prolonging the story unnecessarily or trying to fill the narrative to ensure the possibility of a third or more seasons, Arcane presented a spectacular story extended over the course of 18 episodes (two seasons) and then finished clearly. Although this may have been partly influenced by the increasingly busy schedules of the lead actresses, Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell, whose careers were in remarkable ascendancy, narrative logic required maintaining a tight structure.

It's an unfortunate trend, both in the fantastic genre and in other areas, to insist on more seasons without a clear vision. In particular, for the fantasy genre, well-thought-out narrative planning is vital. Without a solid foundation, these narratives risk becoming vague and offering a much weaker experience due to a lack of clear direction.

Arcane thus avoided the fatal flaws that affect competitors in the fantasy sphere, while providing an amazing visual experience and an emotionally charged narrative that keeps the audience always in suspense. All of these achievements take place over the course of the 18 episodes, before the series ends elegantly, perfectly solving the central thesis. Therefore, Arcane deserves its place as the best fantasy production on Netflix to date.
