Leo Nguyen 07.11.2026

Recent Film Challenges

Butler returned as John Garrity in Greenland 2: Migration earlier this year. This sequel faced difficulties. Budgeted at an estimated $90 million, it needed about $200 million to break even. It only grossed $52 million globally.

Netflix Release Issues

Another Butler project, In The Hand of Dante , a crime thriller on Netflix, lacked a major promotional campaign. Negative reviews from film festivals preceded this. Butler starred alongside Jason Momoa and Oscar Isaac in this production.

Past Successes Shine

In contrast, his 2009 classic, Law Abiding Citizen , was a major box office hit. It surpassed $125 million with a production cost of only $50 million. He worked with Jamie Foxx on this success. Initially, Butler was set to play the lawyer. Foxx was meant to be Clyde Shelton. They switched roles after reading the script. This change proved highly engaging for audiences.

Temporary Netflix Availability

Although Law Abiding Citizen was on Netflix recently, its presence is temporary. The streaming service announced its removal at the end of the month. Viewers must watch it before November 30th.

Law Abiding Citizen Narrative Details

The story focuses on Clyde Shelton. He witnesses his family's death. When the justice system fails him, Shelton acts alone. He executes those responsible. He plans a complex revenge against institutions. This revenge targets the deceased wife and daughter as well.

F. Gary Gray directed Law Abiding Citizen . Kurt Wimmer wrote the screenplay, also known for The Beekeeper . Rotten Tomatoes shows 26% from critics and 75% from viewers. The film premiered on October 16, 2009, and runs for 109 minutes.
