The Shining (1980)

Room 237 in the Overlook Hotel carries hidden meaning. In Stephen King's novel, the room was 217. The number was changed during production. The crew feared real guests would avoid room 217 at the actual filming location, the Timberline Lodge.

The Dark Knight (2008)

The hospital explosion scene went slightly wrong. As the Joker walks away from the exploding hospital, the planned explosion sequence stalled for a moment before restarting. Heath Ledger stayed in character. He improvised his reaction by repeatedly pressing the detonator.

Jurassic Park (1993)

Toy dogs helped create some dinosaur sounds. The film's sound designers combined recordings of various animals. This included dogs playing with plush toys for some smaller dinosaur noises.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

A real friendship exists behind a famous scene. The four actors playing the hobbits became genuinely close during filming. All four got identical tattoos of the word ninein Elvish. This referred to the nine members of the Fellowship.

Toy Story (1995)

A reference to The Shining hides in a rug. The rug in Sid's house features a geometric pattern inspired by the Overlook Hotel carpet. This is a fun nod to Stanley Kubrick's horror classic, hidden in Pixar's first feature film.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

The contents of the briefcase are never revealed. The golden glow inside Marsellus Wallace's briefcase was intentionally left unresolved. Quentin Tarantino never established an official answer. This leaves fans to form their own theories.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

The poster contains a clever detail. The butterfly covering Jodie Foster's mouth on the original poster features a skull-shaped pattern on its back. This was inspired by Salvador Dali and Philippe Halsman's famous photograph, „In Voluptas Mors”.

Back to the Future (1985)

The time-traveling car was initially completely different. The DeLorean was not always the plan. An early script version featured a refrigerator as the time-travel device. Producers later decided a car would be more visually exciting.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Real snow made of asbestos was used. The snow falling over Dorothy and her friends in the poppy field was created using artificial snow from chrysotile. This material was unfortunately common in Hollywood productions of that era.

Goodfellas (1990)

The family dinner scene is real. The woman playing Tommy's mother in the famous dinner scene was Catherine Scorsese, Martin Scorsese's real mother. Many details of the scene came from actors improvising around her.

The Matrix (1999)

A number pattern hides throughout the film. The number 101 appears repeatedly across the movie. It shows up in Neo's apartment, the room where Morpheus is held, and the final confrontation hallway. This highlights the film's recurring ideas about control and artificial reality.

Jaws (1975)

The mechanical shark had to be hidden for most of the film. The mechanical shark malfunctioned frequently during production. This forced Steven Spielberg to suggest its presence through music, camera angles, and character reactions. This approach ultimately made the creature more frightening.

The Godfather (1972)

A real cat was used in the opening scene. The cat with Marlon Brando in the opening scene was not in the original script. Francis Ford Coppola found the animal wandering the studio. He gave it to the actor, who integrated it into his performance.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

A sword fight was supposed to be much longer. The original plan called for an elaborate duel between Indiana Jones and a swordsman. Harrison Ford felt unwell and suggested simply stabbing the man. This created one of the franchise's most amusing moments.

Titanic (1997)

It contains a painting done by James Cameron himself. The hands drawing Rose in the famous portrait scene belong to director James Cameron. He created the original sketch used in the film, rather than letting Leonardo DiCaprio execute the drawing.
