The main reason to watch Orphan Black is to see Tatiana Maslany deliver a once-in-a-generation performance as each clone. Every clone has a distinct personality, accent, and mannerism. Maslany's Emmy-winning acting makes it easy to forget that one actor plays all the interacting clones. Each character feels like a completely different person. Without Maslany, the series would falter, but the writing and plot, alongside her performance, make this show so memorable.
Plot Twists and Thematic Depth
Orphan Black starts with a compelling mystery before becoming a full-fledged thriller. The stakes rise each season with new dangers introduced into the plot. It is a perfect show for fans of Manifest, full of twists. Yet, beneath all the twists and turns, Orphan Black is, above all, a compelling exploration of a group of women who unite when they realize their world was based on a lie, and questions of nature versus nurture.
The series features a very diverse cast of people of color and queer characters. The story explores bodily agency and integrity, and ethics in science. The show was a dream come true for board game fans, which appeared prominently in set decorations and as a way of conveying many plot elements and mysteries.
Diversity and Board Game References
Orphan Black had two spin-offs and a Japanese adaptation. The series ran for five seasons, with BBC America canceling the show after the fifth season in 2017. Yet, it was not the end. Although the series ended on a fairly definitive note, a spin-off titled Orphan Black: Echoes premiered in 2023. Curiously, the show took a full year to reach the US, where it debuted on BBC America and AMC. The spin-off is set 37 years after the original's finale, follows Kira (the protagonist's daughter) as an adult, and features Krysten Ritter as an amnesiac woman. The spin-off received mixed reviews, praised for being more than just a clone of Orphan Black, but noted for failing to match its predecessor's impact. It lasted a single season.
Spin-Offs and Legacy
There was also a 10-episode audio series titled Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, which actually continued the main series' story and featured Tatiana Maslany as all the clones, while bringing back other original cast members. Finally, there was even a Japanese adaptation of the show, titled Orphan Black – 7 Genes, which aired in 2017 on Fuji TV. It is a testament to the enduring popularity of the Orphan Black universe, which continues to inspire new stories and keeps fans returning after so many years. If you have not had the pleasure of meeting all the clone sisters, the addition of Orphan Black to the HBO Max library is the perfect opportunity to do so.
