She emphasized the importance of showcasing diverse experiences within a historically Black college setting, drawing from real student stories to shape the narrative. The cast, including Chibuikem Uche as Kojo and Alijah Kai as Rashida, underwent workshops to connect with the legacy of the series while bringing their own perspectives.
The actors immersed themselves in the culture of HBCUs, attending lectures and engaging with alumni to understand the depth of their roles. Uche described playing Kojo as both an honor and a responsibility, noting the character’s journey mirrors his own growth as a young artist. Kai shared that Rashida’s strength came from listening to women who navigated similar spaces in the 90s, blending past and present struggles.
What Challenges Arose During Production?
Filming faced delays due to scheduling conflicts and the need for authentic set details, from dorm decor to cafeteria menus. Pride insisted on hiring Black department heads across key crews to ensure cultural accuracy behind the camera. Despite hurdles, she said the team’s commitment to truthfulness kept the project grounded and meaningful.
The reboot seeks to spark conversations about identity, education, and community, much like its predecessor did three decades ago. Early screenings have received positive feedback for its humor and heart, suggesting it could resonate with both longtime fans and new audiences. Netflix plans to support the launch with campus tours and discussion guides.
