Prime Video's Dark Tower Series Will Make Other Fantasy Shows Look Small

The Rise of Modern Fantasy

For decades, fantasy shows were infamous for shoddy effects, unconvincing costumes, and limited sets due to tight budgets. That changed in 2011 when HBO transformed the genre with Game of Thrones. Based on George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, the series became a phenomenon that redefined standards. It spawned two direct spin-offs and inspired major shows like Starz's Outlander, Netflix's The Witcher, and Prime Video's The Wheel of Time.

A Massive Source Material

After a critical and box-office failure in 2017, horror legend Mike Flanagan is ready to adapt Stephen King's The Dark Tower saga for Prime Video. The source material is immense. The novels cover over 4,000 pages. This massive text gives King the space to build a truly immersive and complex fictional universe. Compared to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings (1,000-1,500 pages) and The Witcher's literary materials (3,500 pages), King's saga is genuinely gigantic. Only A Song of Ice and Fire comes close in length. HBO struggled to conclude that complex story in its final season.

Flanagan's Ambitious Plan

Flanagan has a clear plan to manage the source material's scope. In a statement to Deadline in early 2026, he mentioned hoping to structure the adaptation into five seasons and two films. This ambitious scale would provide enough room to explore King's saga without radically altering it.

It is easy to imagine the series making a strong start. HBO's It prequel, Welcome to Derry, was a massive hit with audiences and critics. However, the major fear remains that Prime Video could cancel the production at any moment. The Wheel of Time was canceled after just three seasons despite being critically acclaimed. Its source material is one of the longest in the fantasy genre. Fans cannot breathe easy until all five seasons and two films are finalized.
