Scarlett Johansson's Overlooked Sci-Fi Masterpiece on Netflix Is a Must-Watch

A Surprisingly Mature Sci-Fi Prequel

It was easy to dismiss Transformers One as a childish film when it first released in 2024. However, the marketing failed to show how strong the movie actually is. Two years later, this prequel is not only the strongest entry in the Transformers franchise, but one of the best sci-fi films of recent years. Unfortunately, not everyone is willing to give it the chance it deserves.

Transformers One takes the story back three billion years before Michael Bay's live-action films. It explores the personal histories of iconic characters. The film follows young Orion Pax (voiced by Chris Hemsworth), a sensitive robot living on Cybertron. There, individuals are separated into classes based on their ability to transform. When he and his best friend D-16 (voiced by Brian Tyree Henry) rebel against the system, they are forced to flee. During their adventure, the two friends gain new and disheartening perspectives on their people's future.

The animated film is a perfect biography that enhances the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron. They started as best friends and became bitter enemies. Transformers One avoids a one-dimensional corruption story. Instead, it offers legitimate and understandable motives for D-16 to rebel against Cybertron's class system, even if his methods turn him into an antihero. The Optimus Prime character becomes more tangible thanks to this film, making his role in other Transformers movies even better.

Why Did Transformers One Fail at the Box Office?

Beyond Hemsworth and Henry, Transformers One features an impressive voice cast. It includes Scarlett Johansson as Elita-1, Keegan-Michael Key as B-127, Steve Buscemi as Starscream, Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion, and Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime. The film also boasts beautifully realized animation. This is part of why critics gave it an impressive 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience agrees, giving the film a 97% score. No one expected Transformers One to be so entertaining or sincere. Certainly, no one expected it to outperform the rest of the franchise.

Unfortunately, Transformers One was a massive box office failure. It performed poorly despite positive reviews and word of mouth. With an estimated budget between $75 million and $147 million, the film earned only $129 million in its theatrical run. It failed to recoup its budget and generate profit. Although toy sales are a major factor in the Transformers franchise, it is hard not to view this 2024 prequel as a major failure.

One reason Transformers One might have failed is its marketing. Trailers promoted the film's comedic aspects, aiming to sell tickets to younger audiences and families. However, this marketing hid the film's darker themes, which are among its strongest elements. Many casual movie fans might have considered the prequel a bad kids' film, even though it offers entertainment for older audiences.

Will We Ever See a Transformers One Sequel?

Transformers One also had to compete with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. That film was a huge box office success, stealing the number one spot in Transformers' opening weekend. From that point on, it was downhill for the animated film. It quickly lost momentum and ended with a modest $129 million.

In the months and years after release, many Transformers fans expressed frustration. They accused the proud public of ignoring the animation and the film's marketing team for misrepresenting the story. In this sense, it became an unexpected cult classic. Many franchise fans praise it as one of the best entries. However, this does not erase the fact that Transformers One is the second-lowest grossing entry in the franchise, surpassed only by the 1986 animated film. At its peak, Transformers films earned over $1 billion globally. Even some lower-grossing entries exceeded $400 million. Numerically, Transformers One was a total failure.

Initially, there were plans to create an entire franchise starting with Transformers One. The story was conceived as a trilogy, which would gradually follow Orion Pax and D-16.
