Cold Mountain Joins Paramount+ Lineup

The 2003 epic „Cold Mountain,” set against the brutal backdrop of the American Civil War, is now available on the Paramount+ streaming service. The film marks an early but significant screen credit for Charlie Hunnam, who plays Bosie, an albino member of the Home Guard described as extremely violent and aggressive. Although a supporting part, the role came on the heels of Hunnam’s breakout television work in Queer as Folk , Undeclared and Nicholas Nickleby , helping him springboard to larger Hollywood projects.

The cast of „Cold Mountain” reads like a roll call of early‑2000s talent. Leads include Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renée Zellweger, while Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman and Donald Sutherland appear in supporting capacities. The picture is adapted from Charles Frazier’s bestselling novel of the same name and follows Confederate soldier W. P. Inman (Law), who deserts his unit to return to his beloved wife Ada (Kidman) in the war‑torn South. Ada’s struggle to survive is complicated by the enigmatic wanderer Ruby (Zellweger), who arrives under the pretense of „help.”

Critics praised the film’s seamless blend of military conflict, deep drama and romance. It earned more than $173 million worldwide against a $79 million budget, confirming both commercial appeal and artistic merit. On Rotten Tomatoes the movie holds a 70 % Tomatometer rating based on 220 critic reviews, and a 77 % audience score from over 100,000 user votes. Recent commentary still lauds its endurance; a May 2026 review notes, Minghella’s Cold Mountain is a visually stunning, exceptional adaptation of Frazier’s novel. Few films manage to translate a novel to screen so successfully.

The review also highlights the performances of Law and Kidman while giving a nod to the supporting cast, including Hunnam. „Nicole Kidman delivers a solid performance, Jude Law is remarkable, and the film is well‑acted overall. Most secondary actors are memorable even in brief appearances,” the critic writes.

Hunnam himself has reflected on the experience. While later starring in leading roles such as Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim , he still regards „Cold Mountain” as one of his first performance milestones. During promotion for Children of Men in 2006, he said, It’s kind of my trilogy of crazy characters. I played the psychopath in Cold Mountain , my character in Green Street Hooligans is pretty psychotic, and now I have this role.

Technical details: theatrical release on 25 December 2003, runtime 154 minutes, directed and written by Anthony Minghella, produced by Sydney Pollack and William Horberg. Its addition to Paramount+ offers a fresh chance for audiences to rediscover a richly layered story that continues to resonate more than two decades after its debut.
