From Virtual Battlefields to the Silver Screen
Hollywood veteran Ben Affleck revealed on the „theNew Heights” podcast that he spends his free time playing online shooters such as Fortnite. While navigating the game’s chaotic battlefields, the Oscar‑winner sometimes finds himself locked in heated voice‑chat arguments with younger players. The actor also disclosed that the eccentric outfits featured in his newest Netflix thriller, Animals , were directly lifted from the game’s most colorful character skins, including a fuzzy bunny mask worn by the film’s antagonist.

Dungeon Crawler Carl Expands at New York Comic Con with New Plushies and FiguresAffleck’s admission came during a casual interview about the creative process behind Animals , a tense, animal‑themed thriller that debuted on Netflix earlier this month. When asked about the film’s striking visual style, the actor explained that he scoured Fortnite’s ever‑changing wardrobe options for inspiration, noting that the game’s „wild, over‑the‑top designs” matched the movie’s surreal tone. He added that his own gaming sessions often devolve into „friendly fire” moments, where teenage opponents challenge his tactics and trash‑talk him in real time. The actor laughed that the experience reminded him of „being on set with a bunch of kids who think they know everything.”
Affleck described how a particular Fortnite skin—a plush, rabbit‑themed mask—caught his eye during a late‑night match. „I was playing, and this bunny mask just popped up. It was absurd, but it stuck with me,” he said. The mask later appeared on the shoulder of Animals ’ main villain, a choice Affleck believes adds a layer of unsettling humor to the film’s dark narrative. Production designer Maya Patel confirmed that the team deliberately borrowed the mask’s texture and color palette, adapting it to fit the movie’s gritty aesthetic while preserving its playful absurdity.
Why Do Hollywood Stars Like Affleck Get Into Arguments With Kids in Fortnite?
The actor also touched on the broader influence of gaming culture on contemporary cinema. He noted that many directors now scout video games for visual cues, citing recent blockbusters that feature armor designs and cityscapes reminiscent of popular titles. „Games are a visual playground,” Affleck remarked, „and they give us a fresh toolbox for storytelling.”
The podcast host probed the reasons behind Affleck’s frequent clashes with younger gamers. The actor explained that the competitive nature of Fortnite, combined with its built‑in voice chat, often leads to „instant friction.” He said that younger players are quick to call out perceived mistakes, and the anonymity of the platform can amplify hostility. „It’s like being on a set where everyone’s shouting directions,” Affleck joked, adding that he sometimes enjoys the banter as a way to stay sharp.
Industry analysts suggest that such interactions reflect a growing trend of high‑profile celebrities immersing themselves in online gaming communities. While some fans appreciate the authenticity, others criticize the „toxic” environment that can arise when fame meets youthful aggression.
The fallout from Affleck’s revelations may encourage more actors to be transparent about their gaming habits, potentially reshaping public perception of celebrity involvement in digital spaces. As streaming platforms continue to blend gaming aesthetics with film production, the line between virtual and real‑world entertainment is likely to blur further.
