According to The Hollywood Reporter, this move comes as the studios prepare to promote the new installment scheduled for release. The five original films include The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and the three-part Mockingjay series.
Making the entire series freely available serves as a strategic marketing campaign to build anticipation for Sunrise on the Reaping. By removing the paywall, the studios aim to reintroduce the franchise to both longtime fans and new audiences who may have missed the original films. This approach allows viewers to refresh their memory of the story before the new chapter arrives in theaters.
The decision also reflects changing streaming economics, where studios increasingly use free content windows to drive engagement and cross-promote upcoming releases. Fandango's platform will host the films, giving them access to a broad audience base.
What Does This Mean for Viewers?
The free streaming window provides an opportunity for anyone with internet access to watch the complete Hunger Games saga without subscription fees or rental costs. This includes Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen journey from the 74th Hunger Games through the revolution against the Capitol.
The timing coincides with growing nostalgia for early 2010s blockbuster franchises, as audiences seek familiar entertainment during uncertain times. Industry analysts note that free content promotions often lead to increased viewership for subsequent paid releases.
Fans can expect the films to remain available for a limited time, creating urgency around viewing. The promotion will likely run through the summer, building momentum toward the fall release of Sunrise on the Reaping.
