Canceled 2010s Fantasy Series „The Secret Circle” Deserved More Time
An Unexploited Opportunity: Why the 2010s Fantasy Series Deserves Reevaluation
The Secret Circlebegan on The CW in 2011. This show matched the network's focus on YA-influenced teen dramas. It concluded after a single 22-episode season in 2012. Like many mythologically rich shows, it needed more time to fulfill its narrative potential.

This fictional world is based on L. J. Smith's book series. Smith is known for The Vampire Diaries. Britt Robertson played Cassie, who was also in Netflix's Girlboss. Cassie moved to Chance Harbor, Washington, after her mother died in a fire. She lived with her grandmother, Jane, played by Ashley Crow. Initially unaware, Cassie was a witch with unusual magical powers.
Soon, other witches at her new high school recognized her. They invited her to join the Secret Circle. Cassie discovered her maternal lineage traced back to the witch-hunter origins. Her father was John Blackwell, played by Joe Lando, an enigmatic dark witch.
The Circle included Adam (Thomas Dekker), Faye (Phoebe Tonkin), Diana (Shelley Hennig), Melissa (Jessica Parker Kennedy), and Nick (Louis Hunter). Following The CW soap opera style, romance was key. Nick and Melissa developed a relationship. Later, Nick had to respect Melissa even after she was killed and revived. Cassie also developed an instant attraction to Adam, causing resentment from Diana, who already liked him.
The Secret Circlebalanced a coven's magic with high school emotion. Gale Harold played Charles, Diana's father and a former Circle member. Natasha Henstridge, known from Species, played Faye's mother and a former Circle member who was also the high school principal.

This show existed in a crowded supernatural teen drama landscape. The 2000s and early 2010s saw this popularity. The CW had already succeeded with The Vampire Diariesin 2009. This success led to spin-offs like Legacies, which was later canceled. The Secret Circleaimed to capture that creative energy: vampires, witches, teen drama, and magic mixed on The CW.
The series always had major conflicts. It skillfully merged coven magic with typical high school dilemmas. The narrative balanced school dances and flirting with spellbooks and dark forces threatening the Circle. Three episodes focused on school events, and the penultimate episode was at the Prom.
Magically, plots centered on magical crystals sought by various entities. In 2015, Gavin Hetherington wrote a retrospective for Spoiler TV. He reviewed the series three years after its cancellation. Hetherington noted that ratings were solid initially but dropped fast, lagging behind „The Vampire Diaries.”He saw this as a loss, arguing the final episode showed greater potential.
That final episode introduced four new characters linked to Cassie's witch line. However, the show ended before audiences knew their stories. Fans campaigned to keep it, but The CW did not yield. „The Vampire Diariesleft a deeper impact, often cited as a top vampire series. Its short run prevented ”The Secret Circlefrom competing effectively.
Negative critical reviews may have hurt its standing. Brian Lowry reviewed it for Variety in 2011. He compared it to „One Tree Hill,”but with witches, noting its limitations.
