From Theaters to Home Screens

Based on Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House, the film centers on Ursula Martin, played by Jessica Chastain. She faces a dual challenge, portraying both a mother and a malevolent entity known as Other Mommythat threatens her daughter. The film generated significant buzz in July after a trailer showcased a chilling jump scare featuring the titular character contorted under a table. Despite its theatrical success following the October 9 premiere, the film faced harsh criticism. It currently holds a 19% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 48% audience rating.

Critical Reception and Production

Critics were largely unimpressed by the narrative. Josh Bate of ScreenRant gave the film four out of ten stars, noting that the plot feels predictable and lacks genuine scares. The Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus suggests that while Jessica Chastain delivers a brave performance, the film is ultimately too silly to be truly terrifying. Directed by Rob Savage with a screenplay by Nathan Elston, the project was produced by James Wan. The cast features Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, Karen Allen, Sean Kaufman, Adam Silver, and Alec Secăreanu.
