Arcane: The Steampunk Series That Redefined Video Game Adaptations
Arcane Redefines Video Game Adaptations
In the world of fiction, worldbuilding is fundamental. Audiences must believe in the specific rules and locations of each universe. While a powerful story with memorable characters is equally important, the lack of a unique framework makes many projects feel flat. The universe in Game of Thrones perfectly illustrates how a living world can support plots, characters, and events. However, it is not the only remarkable example. Avatar: The Last Airbender, Wednesday, One Piece, His Dark Materials, and The Legend of Vox Machina all offer excellent worldbuilding, but none reach the level of Arcane. Based on the video game League of Legends, Arcane brings Runeterra to life, focusing on two key locations: Zaun and Piltover. In many ways, Arcane has rewritten the rules of adaptations, greatly expanding the lore from the source material.
Culture picks:
This made the central characters more interesting than their game counterparts, without erasing what made them iconic initially. Besides this, the series offers some of the best animation available, phenomenal voice performances, and a captivating, multi-layered story, which explains its popularity. Above all, the worldbuilding in Arcane shines, showing competitors how it is done right.
Arcane's worldbuilding is unsurpassed in the fantasy genre. There are many praiseworthy aspects in Arcane, but the way it creates one of the most convincing visual universes is without equal. Of course, much credit belongs to League of Legends for the foundation laid in the game, but Arcane takes everything to a completely new level. It captures the essence of Zaun and Piltover with remarkable precision, showing how class division creates drastic differences. Once a united city, the two regions have separated, with Zaun becoming a dirty, dark underworld full of crime, poverty, and hatred toward authority. This allowed its residents to unite and rebel against the wealthier inhabitants of Piltover, who enjoyed a much better quality of life.
Unmatched Worldbuilding in the Fantasy Genre
The district is much cleaner, with blue skies and well-maintained buildings, governed by an elitist council, and Arcane makes it clear how these environments affect the characters living in them, creating strong and contrasting personalities. Often, there is clear disdain from one group toward the other, but there are also residents in Piltover and Zaun who question their own district's ideals. These locations are in themselves severely praiseworthy for their realism, and that is before entering the proper fiction elements. With each legend in the video game having unique abilities, Arcane explores the complex system of magic, with Hextech being the source of many different powers. In addition, Shimmer also triggers enhanced traits and abilities, and the fairly complex lore creates a living, dynamic world full of major personalities.
Building such a detailed universe serves the story well, as we see how power corrupts people, and how these political and social aspects can push two close sisters onto completely different paths. As a result, the series has become a modern classic, and Arcane ranks among the best fiction series of our century.
Perfectly Expanding the Source Material
Arcane perfectly expands the source material. League of Legends did an excellent job presenting numerous interesting characters and locations across Runeterra, but the way Arcane expands this is unparalleled. The relationship between Jinx and Vi is a perfect demonstration of this, as their shared lore in the game was fairly superficial before Arcane appeared. Before the series, it was not even confirmed that the two are sisters, although the implications were there, and Arcane managed to show their tragic history, capturing their complicated relationship and the reason they are not particularly close in League of Legends. Similarly, the game presented Vi and Caitlyn as friends and colleagues, but Arcane offered an emotional love story between them, which is far from smooth, showing the emotional rollercoaster they experienced before finally finding a sense of peace together. The war between Piltover and Zaun was also an excellent example of expanding source material.
The history of these two regions was partially explored in the game, but the level of detail Arcane added to bring them to life and create conflict is hard to match. All these aspects prove why Arcane is the gold standard for video game adaptations, as it set the template for series like Fallout and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to follow. However, the fact that Arcane focuses largely on canonical characters, while creating fascinating new characters like Silco, Sevika, and Mel, highlights the impressive vision this series had from the start, the reason it ranks above the competition. We hope that upcoming spin-offs can follow this example and continue Arcane's remarkable legacy.
